Yazoo Land Scandal and the Origin of Alabama Politics

- Osborne, Tom
The western lands of Georgia were the last to be conveyed to the federal government. The bribery of the Georgia legislators led to a political reversal and the rescission of grants but left those who had bought land without recourse. At the same time, white pioneers were pouring across Indian lands to settle as cotton planters with their enslaved laborers. All this led to violence and a Supreme Court decision in 1810, Fletcher v. Peck, that became one of the cornerstones of federal jurisprudence. It also led to the expulsion of Native American and the birth of Alabama politics in the Black Belt.
