Why did people in the ancient Near East prefer many gods to just one? This talk looks at monotheism's failure in Egypt and then tries to answer this question by comparing and contrasting the polytheism of ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt with the monotheism of the Hebrews. Doing this can help us understand better how people today, from Christians to atheists, think about the divine.
