The Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen

- Haulman, Daniel L.
The first Black pilots in United States military service deserve to be remembered for their overcoming of racism and the many obstacles on their way to fighting overseas for their country. They also deserve to be remembered for their notable achievements in combat, such as shooting down 112 enemy aircraft, earning 96 Distinguished Flying Crosses, earning three Distinguished Unit Citations, and for losing fewer bombers to enemy aircraft than any other fighter groups of the Fifteenth Air Force during World War II.

This presentation will cover not only their achievements in combat overseas, but the training the received, as well. This talk will also correct some major errors in the depiction of the Tuskegee Airmen story, refuting what had once been accepted as fact but was instead fiction. This presentation will reveal the Tuskegee Airmen individuals, units, bases, aircraft, and civil rights achievements as worthy of great honor — a story that needs to be told again, without distortions.
