For several years, author Melanie S. Morrison has been engaged in intensive research and writing about her ancestors in Montevallo, Alabama, who accumulated wealth from two systems of theft: the violent dispossession of Native people from their homelands and the enslavement of Black Americans. In this presentation, Morrison will share what she has learned on this journey of research, reckoning, and collaborative work with colleagues in Montevallo who are seeking to unearth suppressed histories and tell a fuller, truer story about the legacies of slavery.
