As part of its 2023 Symposium, Project Threadways has partnered with Florence Arts and Museums to curate a free, public program around the Shoals' rich textile history.

Placemaking Through Textiles is a multi-stop journey exploring the Shoals’ history of cotton production through a scholarly presentation, curated exhibition, and community meal. Activities begin with a presentation at the Kennedy-Douglass Art Center by historian Katie Knowles, Ph.D., a scholar of textiles, U.S. slavery, and African American history. Follow that up with a tour of a limited-time exhibition at Pope's Tavern Museum on the history and legacy of cotton production in the region. The day concludes with a casual supper at historic Pickett Place.
