The lynching of Emmett Till sparked the Civil Rights Movement and forever changed our national conversation about race and justice. This workshop, designed for high school teachers, will explore how to use poetry and music to teach the legacy of this lynching to today’s students, helping them to connect the past and the present in meaningful ways. In addition to discussing poems and songs spanning more than sixty years, participants will learn more about the historical background to the case, as well as share ideas for classroom assignments and exercises. Ideal for teachers in either the Social Studies or English course of study.
